Hoodia Side Effects: Knowing Is Good

by Phil Summers

Many popular diet pills sold today contain hoodia gordonii to promote weight loss. Hoodia has been highly touted for its effectiveness and is said to be free of dangerous side effects. Should we just believe this marketing? What are the hoodia side effects?

The herb has been used for years by bushmen in the African desert. They may not suffer from hoodia side effects because it is part of their natural diet. People in the United States don't have a history of using this product and so it is possible that it may have a different effect upon them.

There is information written about the possibility that hoodia side effects include possible liver damage. The harm comes from the active ingredients that are being combined with hoodia. If this is true then taking hoodia can possibly cause harmful interactions with other prescription drugs a person takes. The tribe members in Africa who consume hoodia are not taking the prescriptions we are.

Hoodia should be taken with care by diabetics. It is believed that hoodia causes the brain to believe that the blood sugar level in the diabetic is acceptable. If the blood sugar drops to a level that is too low while the diabetic is on hoodia, there could be complications.

Some of the other hoodia side effects include a suppression of both the appetite and thirst. These could be dangerous as it may be possible to become extremely dehydrated while taking hoodia since the person taking it would not get thirsty and may forget to drink fluids.

There are many counterfeit hoodia products on the market. It is possible that some products are impure and it is difficult to determine if the product you purchase even includes pure hoodia. You really can't be sure of what you're taking when you buy some of these products.

There is a proposal to include a warning label on hoodia gordonii diet pills. The proponents of this warning want it to say that pregnant women or those who are nursing should not take hoodia. The warning will also say that those who have eating disorders or are underweight should not use it. And they want to warn of possible allergic reactions to hoodia as well. The best advice is to talk with your physician before taking hoodia or any other weight loss supplement.

Hoodia gordonii is a popular diet product being advertised as an herb that has no side effects. But are there any hoodia side effects? Although it has used for years by African Bushmen it is new to our culture and our bodies. They don't use prescription drugs like we do so taking hoodia diet pills may cause harmful drug interactions. It can possibly cause liver damage and shouldn't be used by diabetics. There are many counterfeit versions of the product making it hard to know if you are getting a safe product. When starting a weight loss program you will be better off consulting your doctor.
